5 Reasons to Choose Asters Over Mums. 1) Many asters are native and perennials. 2) They’re host plants for butterflies. 3) They bloom later into fall — perfect for monarch migration. 4) They provide a steady nectar supply for bees. 5) Their seed heads feed birds through the winter. A beautiful, hardworking alternative for your fall garden. New here? Come follow along to learn more about gardening, nature, and our pollinators. #NativePlants #FallGarden #PollinatorFriendly #SupportPollinators #Mon

Asters are a fantastic plant for a food source for pollinators in late summer in early fall. For any late summer plant like Asters that want to be 5 feet tall or more you can do what’s called the Chelsea chop to keep them smaller. When the plant wakes up in the spring by early summer, it will be 3 feet tall and green with no flowers. It’s at that point that you cut the stems down to 12 inches tall. That’s a lot of height out and you will not be removing flowers yet. Throughout the rest of the pl

The garden might slow down in fall… but it doesn’t have to stop. These Paeony Asters were my surprise finale this year! I planted the seeds from @outsidepride back in June, and they bloomed beautifully from the end of August all the way until our first frost last week. Such an easy to grow seed, and they added the sweetest pops of soft pink just as everything else was fading. I’m already looking forward to planting these again next year! Have you tried growing Paeony Asters from seed yet? #garde

Skip the mums, and plant some native aster this fall 🌼🍁 Asters are just as beautiful, bloom for around the same amount of time, and offer crucial ecological benefits like food and habitat for pollinators🐝 Plus, unlike mums, which you will most likely have to rebuy each year, asters tend to be successful perennials, so they should come back year after year🍂 #nativeplants #aster #mums #fallgardening #falldecorations #plantforpollinators

Mums are an incredibly popular fall decoration, but they offer little support to North American wildlife. Since they’ve been cultivated for their showy double blooms, they produce little pollen or nectar. Also, as non-native plants, they did not co-evolve with our local ecosystems and do not serve as a host plant for our native butterflies and moths. Instead, consider planting native asters from the Symphyotrichum and Eurybia genera. These keystone species are powerhouse plants, serving as a hos
