In its time, Lynch, Kentucky, was designed as the finest coal camp/town in the US. Built by U.S. Coal & Coke (a subsidiary of U.S. Steel), it was made to last and is still extremely well-preserved and heavily populated relative to other coal towns. At its peak, Lynch boasted a population of over 10,000 people in the 1940s.
