Yesterday at the Great South Bay, NY, a man was thrown overboard while making a sharp turn at high speed. The unmanned boat eventually smashed into a locals dock. No kill switch was attached to the man, and he waited in the water for over an hour before help arrived. He was pulled from the water and treated for hypothermia. This boat was down a motor and the rudder was stuck. They’d been towed all day, but when it came time to head down a narrow canal, the tow company wouldn’t go without a second boat help guide them and they didn’t want to pay for that. So they tried to do it alone… with no steering. They nearly crashed into docked boats before someone had the idea to use a piece of wood as a makeshift tiller/rudder. These are the terrible stories that are tough to see, but need to be shared. This 31’ center console was carrying nine people who were returning from Block Island, RI returning to Old Saybrook, CT.
